An apostle (Greek apóstolos) is the “one who is sent away” or a messenger and ambassador. Christians in the 1st century brought God’s message to the world. The same mission applies to Jesus’s followers of today.

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. – 2 Corinthians 5:20
