Holy Scripture is currently on display at the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, TX. This artwork continues the remarkable tradition of Victor Bregeda’s paintings inspired by Christian faith. This time, Victor takes the focus off Communion and puts his emphasis on the Bible.
The classic Bregeda composition remains the same. The majestic candle rests on the Holy Book while the image of Jesus appears in the flame. The figures of the apostles emerge from the molten wax and surround the Savior.
A man in a robe is standing before the candle. Perhaps, he is a mere follower of Jesus, or a teacher, or even a scribe. Bregeda leaves the story open-ended.
As the man reads and prays, the New Testament text comes to life. The radiance of Christ creates the impression of a strong, spiritual connection.
As always, Victor is presenting us underlying clues. The book cover is showing its age, suggesting the longevity of the Christian message. The ladders point to spiritual growth. The bookmark plays a special role; it links the still life arrangement with the action scene of the man reading the Scripture and standing upon its foundation.
