This painting examines the two sides of God’s character that are intertwined throughout the Bible – mercy and justice. The scene takes place on the edge of Heaven, right before God revealed Himself to Noah, and communicated to him the blueprints of the ark.
In addition to Noah’s ark, we see many other ships that appear to be wrecked. They symbolize numerous occasions when God extended His grace to humanity. Yes, Once More, God will give His creation a chance, only this time it will be combined with well-deserved punishment. Noah and his family will be given a chance to live while everybody else will be destroyed.
“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time… So the Lord said, ‘I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created… But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” – Gen 6:5-8
The books and ladders are classic Bregeda elements that show God’s wisdom and the path to spiritual growth. The angel is looking down upon Earth, perhaps contemplating the magnitude of the upcoming events.
