Temptation of Christ was recently on display at the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, TX.
In this painting, Victor examines the dialog of Jesus and the devil during Christ’s 40-day fast in the wilderness, found in Matthew 4:1-11.
The devil is shown in two forms: the snake on Jesus’ staff and the hidden face carved out of the shore line. A pillar of stones is set in front of Jesus, representing God’s covenant and Satan’s first test – “…If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Matt 4:3.
In the distance, we can see a large city, which symbolizes “the kingdoms of the world,” promised by the devil in his third test in Matt 4:8.
Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” – Mat 4:10. Bregeda reveals that Christ is not alone.
There is the face of God the Father in the cloud, leaning on the back of Jesus.
