In the artist’s opinion, Cup-Bearer may be his best piece from the Tanais period of 1995-1997. This painting has been re-purchased from a private collection – check for availability.

The modern town of Azov is located near the Tanais historic site. This is the place where Victor Bregeda was born and has lived most of his life. Tanais was an ancient Greek city in the Don River delta located on the northeastern section of the Sea of Azov. Founded late in 3rd century BC by ancient Greek merchants, Tanais quickly developed into a natural trade post among surrounding regions.

Wine was one of the goods that was actively traded between Greece and other countries. In this painting, Victor stages a  transaction between two wine merchants. Bregeda places a giant wine amphora in the middle of the scene and captures the tasting of the wine.
